Music as Therapy | Kerrin Wallace

Why Music Is The Perfect Companion For Travel

Music helps us find our place in the world, reminding us of our past or allowing us to escape reality. Music is my second world, one I can return to at any time without needing to pack a bag. It is a universal language capable of expressing and communicating emotions, stories, and images common to all humans - no matter our background or culture. Music is a balm for our soul.

My two greatest yearnings as a child were travel and music. I knew both had the power to transport me to exotic parts of the world, away from the tedium of life in regional Australia.

Dreams Come True

Fast forward a couple of decades and those dreams became a reality. Living in one of the most exciting cities in the world, running a business where we used the psychology of music to elicit behavioural change (and to pack the dancefloor). Over the years, we learned about music's extraordinary power to stimulate emotions, evoke memories and heal.

When Travel and Music Converge

Music can be a vital part of any trip, helping us feel a sense of place and connecting with the local culture and ourselves. A single track can evoke a kaleidoscope of memories. Suddenly, you clearly recall amusing travel companions, a charming taverna, dancing 'til dawn and swimming in the crystal clear waters of the Aegean Sea. Press play and the track "Music Sounds Better With You" instantly takes me back to Hydra, Greece.

During my time in London, travel was the number one remedy to beat the stress of big city living. Two weeks of swimming and sunshine fully recharged the batteries. I've been fortunate to travel the four corners of the globe, diving in the turquoise waters of Mozambique and sipping cocktails poolside in Colombia. But it's not just about seeing new places or trying new things—it's about feeling a part of something bigger than yourself. It's about connecting with people from all over the world and learning that we're not all that different from one another. That's why I love travelling so much—it reminds me that we're all here for a reason and that life is worth living.

Music is the perfect travel companion—an ally that helps make our experiences more memorable. Imagining new places, revisiting old haunts and joining others on their travels means we're all taking journeys into unknown spaces where we can find ourselves—on the road, in the streets and in our heads. Music reminds us of where we've been and where we're going.

The Playlist

A sample of the soundtrack to my holidays. Tunes for different times of the day. It begins with a soothing breakfast blend and moves to an eclectic mix of lunchtime vibes. After lunch it's time for a poolside mix. Finally, an uptempo selection for pre-dinner drinks or post-dinner dancing.

Bon voyage.
